The recent release of India Hate Lab's report on hate speech in India has sparked widespread debate and garnered attention from major news agencies such as the BBC, The Wire, and others. While initially presented as a comprehensive analysis, closer scrutiny reveals troubling biases and factual inaccuracies within the report. This analysis aims to critically examine the data presented by India Hate Lab, shedding light on its questionable methodology and highlighting its potential connections to entities based in Pakistan. By delving into the intricacies of the report, we seek to uncover the underlying agendas and implications of its findings, ultimately providing a nuanced perspective on the issue of hate speech in India.

Problems with the INDIA HATE LAB data:

    • India Hate Lab collects data from the social media platforms (Twitter, Facebook, Instagram etc). There are many instances when a fake news spread by miscreant entities. There is no mechanism or steps to filters/delete such incidents. Many users share identical news in social media platforms. There may be chances of duplicity of data. Most of these incidents lack rational facts and based on perception.

  • Biased representation: The IHL team consists of a single journalist, Aarushi, who may have a personal perspective or agenda that could influence the selection and interpretation of data.

Agenda of INDIA HATE LAB and other similar portals

Portals like India Hate Lab and Hindutva Watch are brain child of the Pakistani deep state. These foreign-based "research groups," are funded by various branches of the Pakistani deep state. They are recruiting Indian nationals living in Western countries to operate these groups and portals.

They are specifically created to spread misinformation about India at the international level. Having Indian representatives in these groups and portals is supposedly to lend credibility to their assertions about increasing "hate" in India.

The research work done by these groups and portals is then given a larger audience and more legitimacy by members of the Washington-based mainstream media.

Raqib Hameed Naik:

Raqib Hameed Naik is a Kashmiri journalist and founder of Hindutva Watch and India Hate Lab, a research project that documents the rise of Hindu nationalism and the persecution of religious minorities in India. He was born in 1995 in Doda, Jammu and Kashmir, India.

Naik’s career in journalism began as a staff reporter with Twocircles.net, where he worked until 2017. During this time, he was based in Kashmir and reported on various stories related to the region.

In 2018, Naik joined The Globe Post as its Indian correspondent. He has also been a guest editor at Beyond Headlines and has contributed to various news outlets, including The Washington Post, The Wall Street Journal, The Guardian, The Intercept, American Kahani, BBC, Daily Express UK, and Tech Crunch, among others.

Raqib Hameed Naik moved to the United States in 2020. Naik’s work with Hindutva Watch has been recognized with the Aminah Assilmi Award in Media Excellence in 2021. Aminah Assilmi Award is given by a Pakistan Jamaat front SoundVision founded by Abdul Malik Mujahid, and which also runs Justice For All.

Hindutva Watch:

The "about us" page on the Hindutva Watch website states that it was established in 2021 by Raqib Hameed Naik. However, Hindutva Watch was existed even in 2015.

So, next question arise: What has been the trajectory of Hindutva Watch's activities since 2015, and what might be the motivations behind Raqib Hameed Naik's alleged misrepresentation of the organization's founding details?

Till 2015, Hindutva Watch's used to post articles from various newspapers, online portals which portray Hindus in bad lights.  It used to post from The Caravan, The Wire, Bloomberg, NYtimes etc

Till 2023, it continued to be active, working anonymously, working without revealing who was actually handling it. However, in January 2023, in an interview to a Western media outlet, Raqib Hameed Naik claimed that he was the man who was running the site.

Since they started so called research work on Hate speech in India, they need an Indian face to justify their fake propaganda and hide the Pakistani angle. Most of the contents that is used on the site is misleading and based on fake news with the intent to incite communal friction in India.

The involvement of the Pakistani establishment was revealed through an "interactive map" found on the Hindutva Watch website. The map was operated by an individual named Sardar Adil Kayani.

India Hate Lab:

After exposed on several instance for spreading fake news and linkage with Pakistan, A new project called "India Hate Lab" was initiated by same elements associated with the Pakistani deep state, aiming to craft and disseminate a more sophisticated narrative for targeting India.

On February 25, 2024, India Hate Lab unveiled its latest report, which has been heavily criticized for its apparent dissemination of propaganda and dissemination of fake news. Interestingly, the timing of the report's release, just prior to the General Elections of 2024, raises suspicions regarding its motives and intentions. It noted that the report seems strategically designed to target the current government of India. Consequently, it comes as no surprise that numerous anti-India entities have seized upon this report as a reference point to launch global campaigns against the country.
